Movie Review: Transsiberian

Hello, my name is Eddie. I'm the owner/manager of Eddie's Video Paradise, located next to the Dollar Store on Grant Street. Eddie's Video Paradise is proud to announce that we are now offering DVDs on Blu-ray, and today the first movie I'm reviewing in this format is Transsiberian. I'm not going to tell you too much about the plot because I don't want to ruin it for you. This is a real edge-of-your-seat thriller.

The movie stars Woody Harrelson as Roy, and Emily Mortimer as Jesse, a married couple who have been working with poor kids in China. They belong to a church group that does this kind of stuff. Anyways, they're finished and now they're going to take the Transsiberian Express, all the way from Beijing to Moscow. They meet another couple, a charming Spanish guy and his young girlfriend. Jesse and the girlfriend become friendly during the trip, and Woody and the Spanish guy go off (during a train stop) to look at the train. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you Woody is a train buff. So anyway, the girls are talking and the guys are looking at the train, and when Woody isn't looking the Spanish guy grabs a long iron rod. We don't see what happens next. The next thing we know, the girls and the Spanish guy are back on the train, but Woody is missing! He's not on the train! Jesse searches the train but Woody's not on it! I think that's all I want to tell you about the movie. Let's just say that one of the themes of the movie is people aren't always who they appear to be.

Transsiberian had me on the edge of my seat, this is a very good thriller. I highly recommend it. It's rated R for "some violence, a scene of torture, strong language and sexual situations." Not for kids.

Why not stop by Eddie's Video Paradise and rent this movie? If our one copy of it is out, I'm sure our staff can find something else for you to watch! Oh yeah, this is a Blu-ray. I didn't see the regular DVD version so I don't know how it compares. Let's just say it looked very good on my 19-inch Magnavox. I would imagine if you had one of those huge 25 inch big-screens it would look awesome. Thanks for reading my review of Transsiberian, and I'll see you at the Video Store!

I hope the title of this post didn't ruin the ending of Citizen Kane for you, but I assume if you're cool enough to be reading my blog then you've already seen CK about 50 times, right? I don't know how many times I've seen it, but each time I do I inevitably say to myself, "I forgot what a fun movie this is!"

Is Citizen Kane the greatest movie (I mean film) ever made? I don't know if it is or not, but I like Roger Ebert's remark that when asked that same question, he answers "Greatest American film ever made". (He's familiar with a lot more foreign films than the rest of us are.) He then goes on to say, "But I love Casablanca more."

I'd have to agree....CK is amazing to watch but it doesn't generate the same emotional response that Casablanca does IMHO. Who can forget the French drowning out the Germans with their spirited rendition of Les Marsailles?

Greatest Film Ever Made? Who cares? Do yourself a favor and watch it again. If Citizen Kane is unavailable, check out Casablanca. Or Stagecoach. Or The Maltese Falcon. Or Mr. Hurlot's Holiday. Or......

If there's two things our dog Lucy loves, it's digging in the sand at the beach, and digging in the snow (if any). I was thinking of calling it Eddie's Video Paradiso in honor of Cinema Paradiso (which I highly recommend) but in the end stuck with Paradise.
